Animated comedy is its own discipline. Live action comedy can lean on a great take from an actor; an animated series has to write the joke, board it, time it, and pay an army of animators to land it. The shows that survive that pipeline year after year deserve a separate ranking from the rest of TV. The Simpsons casts the longest shadow, and the question is which era you grade it on; the eight-season run from the early nineties is still the densest joke-per-minute comedy ever made for English-speaking television. South Park earns its slot for production speed alone, with episodes turned around in days and topical jokes that should not be funny by the time they air, but are. Futurama is the writers' favourite, with science-literate gags that rewatch better than any sitcom of its decade. Archer is the live-action sitcom in animated clothing, and gains points for the cast chemistry holding across more than a hundred episodes. American Dad gets the underrated nod, having quietly been Seth MacFarlane's most consistent show for years. The ranking penalises shows that coasted on shock value and rewards ones whose old episodes still make new viewers laugh. Vote for the series you actually rewatch, not the one with the prestige reputation.
